This may look like self discipline but it’s not

You know when you force yourself to keep going to be productive, when you’re knackered…?

No don’t do that, why?

because you are basically telling your brain that recovery isn’t allowed, and it keeps the stress wiring on even when you’ve stopped pushing through.

You’re teaching your nervous system to stay on high alert instead of regulate!!

Did you know that those cues from your body like thirst, hunger or needing a pee are all about safety, ignoring them because you’re supposedly too busy and focused teaches the nervous system it can’t rely on you to respond

If you stay busy to avoid feeling or thinking your brain stays in “go” mode and it stops your system from shifting gears down into recovery.

When you experience periods of stress and don’t take recovery time you nervous system learns to expect demand all on the time. `it becomes the new baseline and there is no done shift… exhausting.

Sam Adams

A lot of A type people treat rest as something that has to be earned, and that means the brain stays on alert, constantly vigilant.

Flexibility in routines is key to the nervous system regulation because rigidity takes away choice and the nervous sees this as pressure.

Beating yourself up, done it? But did you know it activates threat systems in your body, the brain just see; it the same as external threats.

One of the main safety signals for the nervous system is……. support/help. WHen you try and go it alone all the time it increases peceived threat.

If you’re ignoring bodily warning signs when you’re pushing through and doing intense work it teaches the body not to be listened to…. and in a world where we are really needing to be more connected to our bodies this one really needs to be heeded

Not every situation of discomfort is growth… I had to learn this one big time!! Some discomfort builds capacity, but when it’s all the time… chronic just trains stress and doesn’t build resilence like many think. I used to think I was building resilience, that i had almost been forced to by my situations but my capacity felt like it was increases but I was wired, on edge and hypervigialnt.

This final one is something we’ve all probably done, but many do it continually…. suppression of emotions… we do it to feel and appear in control, like we’ve got it together. But the suppression takes work!! This means you internal load goes up and things don’t get resolved
